Birth Comb
The Dynamic Duo - Birth Comb + TENS
Who would have thought something as simple as a small wooden comb could help with pain relief during labour. How does it work? There's science behind it!
Based on the principles of acupressure and the gate control theory of pain, squeezing a small wooden comb against your palm during a contraction helps in two ways:
1. Acupressure: When you grip a birth comb tightly in your hand, the teeth of the comb press into specific acupressure points in the palm. These points are believed to be connected to other parts of the body and can help to manage pain, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation.
2. Gate Control Theory: This theory suggests that the brain can only process a limited amount of sensory information at once. By holding the comb and feeling the pressure of its teeth in your palm, this sensation can distract the brain from processing the pain signals coming from the uterus during contractions. The brain prioritizes the new sensation (the pressure of the comb) over the pain, thereby reducing the perception of pain.
Why use a Birth Comb during labour?
- During Contractions: Many women find that squeezing the comb in their hand during contractions helps distract from the contraction pain. The sharper sensation from the comb can act as a counter-irritant, diverting attention from the pain of the contraction.
- Mobility: A birth comb is small, portable, and easy to hold, making it a convenient tool to use in almost any labour position.
We would recommend using a birth comb alongside other pain relief techniques, such as a TENS machine, breathing exercises, movement, or while you're in the birthing pool.
For such a small investment, a birth comb is a well-worth tool to have on hand.
