How to choose a newborn, baby or maternity photographer
When to book a newborn photography session
Newborn sessions are usually done in the first one to two weeks after birth, when babies are sleepiest and easiest to settle. Many photographers take a limited number of newborn bookings each month, so it’s common to book during pregnancy and confirm the date once your baby arrives.
When to book a maternity photography session
Most photographers suggest a maternity session in the later stages of pregnancy, often somewhere between about 28 and 36 weeks, but it’s worth checking with your photographer.
What to look for
Look at each photographer’s portfolio to check their style suits you, and ask about session length, where sessions take place (studio, at home or outdoors), what is included and how many edited images you receive. If you’re planning a hospital or home birth, ask whether they also offer birth or fresh 48 photography.
