My Birth Balance Sling
SAFETY CHECK - Birth Partner, this is for you!
REGULARLY CHECK THAT THE SLING STRAPS ARE SECURE. During labour, the birthing mum may move, turn, and twist many times. Make sure the straps remain untangled and firmly secure throughout use.
CHECK THE ‘ANCHOR’ DOOR CAN NOT OR WILL NO BE OPENED. Either lock the door you’re using, choose a door that won’t be used, or place a ‘DO NOT OPEN’ sign on the other side of the door.
USE ONLY AS INTENDED: The sling is designed for support only. It is not designed for climbing, swinging, sitting or supporting full body weight.
Setting Up Your Birth Sling Safely
1. Select a Spot:
Choose a door which can be locked, or is not used, or make sure a ‘do not open’ sign is fixed to the door. Use a door with a regular height (not a door that goes to the ceiling). A non-slip floor under-foot works best or place a yoga mat (or damp towel) under-foot. It’s helpful if you can grip (and not slide) with your feet.
2. Anchor the Sling:
Place the two black round anchors over the top of the door, approximately 55cm apart. Secure the door from being opened from the other side.
2. Test & Safety-Check the Sling:
Before each use, inspect the sling for rips, tears, or loose stitching. Ask your birth partner to test its strength by pulling, leaning, and applying weight (maximum sitting weight: 140 kg).
3. Adjust the Straps:
Position the sling so it’s at a comfortable height for you to kneel, lean, or sit. Your upper body should be supported, but your feet should still reach the floor to allow natural movement. Most positions will work best with the straps on a long length. Use the numbers as a guide to ensure both sides are even. Ensure the straps do not slip under pressure.
4. Move Slowly:
Enter and exit positions carefully. Avoid sudden jerks or extreme stretches. Listen to your body and adjust for comfort. Have your birth partner help with strap adjustments and regularly check that everything remains secure.
5. Keep Support Nearby:
Have a partner or support person close by to assist with adjustments, balance, or safety during labour.
